Step Up Movies: A New-found Obsession

I don't know if I've mentioned it on here, but I really love to dance. It's a passion of mine and brings me immense joy. The Step Up movie series showcases a whole crap ton of dancing. These movies follow different groups of dancers who know each other one way of the other. The premise of each movie is that the group decides that they want to form a crew and compete at some competition. The crew works really hard at a combination (dance) and rehearses a whole ton. Then, at some part the crew faces some sort of difficult challenge that sets them back and won't let them compete. But after hard work they somehow find a way to compete. At the competition they kick the other teams butts (would've used a stronger word but some readers might now appreciate that)  and win the competition.
But lets skip through the boring parts. Easily, the best part of the movies are the dance numbers aka when they are dancing. Not only can the actors act, but they are also really good dancers, of course. To me there is nothing better than watching a good dancer do what they do best. Plus, it totally helps that many of the dancers/actors are extremely good looking. But the worst part about this new Step Up movie obsession is that they aren't even new. Step Up came out in 2006, Step Up 2: The Streets came out in 2008, Step Up 3D came out in 2010, Step Up Revolution (MY FAVORITE) came out in 2012, and finally Step Up: All In came out in 2014, already two years old.
So basically what I'm trying to say here is, I am a totally obsessed when it comes to dance movies. As a matter of fact, Step Up Revolution is the movie that inspired me to get back into dancing, after my eight year "break." In all actuality, I quit dancing because I hated it so much- not dancing as a whole, just Ballet and putting makeup on for the recitals. That was very off topic. Anyways, as a conclusion I'd like to say that my Step Up movie obsession is what I would like to think of as a reflection of my love for dance.

Are Newspapers Going Out Of Style?

How do you learn about the news nowadays? Do you sit in front of a TV and watch it? Do you go on one of your many apps and find it? Do you go on the internet and find it? Notice how I never once mentioned getting news from a newspaper. They may deliver it to your doorstep every day, courtesy of your local newspaper and broadcasting network, but hardly anyone under 20 reads the newspaper.
Our generation has grown up in a digital age. For as long as we have been alive, there have been phones, televisions, the internet, etc. While normal print books and novels may never go out of style, newspaper readers and sales have plummeted within the last few years. This is due to the fact nowadays you don't actually need to go and purchase a paper copy of the newspaper, when you can just go to your phone, google any news network, and look at what is happening on the news, right there on your screen.
The main reason that newspaper sales are declining isn't that the older generations have quit buying them, because they haven't, it's because the younger generations are carrying on those same traditions. Like many other things, I think that newspapers and reporters are going to have to adapt to the younger generations and put their stories online, so that journalism doesn't die out like the newspaper eventually will.

The DUFF: A Review

I think we all can relate to the movie the DUFF. The main character is this tomboyish girl who loves flannel, is fairly antisocial, and is considered to be not the most attractive girl in her friend group. In the DUFF, Bianca (tomboy main character) is forced to “realize” that she is the DUFF in her friend group. DUFF stands for Designated Ugly Fat Friend. Based on the movie title this movie does not disappoint. Bianca ends up going to her childhood best friend for guy advice and in the end she ends up falling for him not her original crush.

Lollapalooza 2016!!!

As of Tuesday of this week the lineup for Lolla this year and tickets went on sale! For those of you who don't know what Lollapalooza is, it is a music festival in Grant Park, Chicago. They play mainly indie/alternative music with the exception of a few headliners that tend to flow into the mainstream music a bit. But those artists are exceptional, for example Red Hot Chili Peppers are one of the headliners this year. The reason that this year is so special is because for one, it's my first year going! Plus it's the 25th anniversary of Lollapalooza so they're pulling out all of the stops. They are having all of the best bands this year, in my opinion.
This year due to the 25th anniversary, instead of having just the standard three days of bands playing, they're having four. Normally it's just Friday through Saturday, but this year they're adding a Thursday! In addition to the extra day, they're having all of the best bands play everyday. Plus did I mention that this is going to be the first year that I'm going to Lollapalooza? To show you just how excited I am about Lollapalooza, I'm going to give you a list of all of the bands I want to see and what days they will be playing on.

United States of Tara

A story line following a mother of two with Multiple Personality Disorder or Dissociative Identity Disorder and her crazy family, United States of Tara will peak your interest. While it isn't a new show (2009-2011), it shows a comedic perspective on what it would be like to live the life of someone who lives with this disorder. Spoiler alert, while the entire series is good as a whole, but the ending was complete crap. It was as if they didn't know how to wrap things up and make a good ending. But that's just my personal opinion.
United States of Tara is a unique show because not only does it follow Tara's life but it follows Buck, Alice, T, and more [alters]. Plus there is Marshal or Moosh, Tara's gay son, Max, Tara's also somewhat psychotic husband, Kate, Tara's misguided teenage daughter who is just trying to figure out her place in the world, and Charmaine, Tara's sister that has stuck by her crazy sister's side throughout their lives. My main reason for loving this show is the characters listed above. The plot is a little shaky at times but knowing these guys will be there makes it all worth while, even that dumb ending I was telling you about.
The underlying plot to the entire series is that Tara is trying to figure out what happened in her childhood to cause the Dissociative Identity Disorder. I won't give away whether she discovers the truth or not but I'll tell you this: In the end, Tara realizes that she is just straight up crazy and needs to get some serious help, not try to cure herself. Spoiler alert, she does!
Nothing much more to say than what I've just explained in the paragraphs above, just that United States of Tara is worth your time, except be prepared for a lackluster ending.

A Review of Room

Realistic. Terrifying. Heartwarming. Heartbreaking. These are the four best words I could find that would best describe Room. A movie about a young mother and her son, Room accurately portrays a situation we all fear to some degree, being kidnapped. After being kidnapped at 17, Joy is kept in a shed and continually raped, when she gives birth to Jack, who spends five years of his life in "Room," which is basically his whole world. We get to see how Joy has had to hide the fact that her and Jack are abducted from her son, because of his age. The story follows the experiences that these two face, and the affect that being kidnapped has taken on their mental health and lives in general.
I really enjoyed this movie because I've had a life long fear of being kidnapped, as surely we all do, and found the ideology and decisions made by the characters to be very realistic sounding. Plus I've always enjoyed a good thriller, where the good guys always wins, which this movie has. I don't want to give too much away but spoiler, Joy and Jack escape their captor! Another reason why I enjoyed this movie is because the acting and setting were very well done. What intrigued me the most was interesting it was to see how "Room" looked while Joy and Jack were held there and after they'd escaped.
I know this blog post has been short but I just figured I would do a mini review and recommendation for those of you who have not seen the incredibly well-done Room.

My Youtube Favorites

This may not be the most original post I've ever done but I felt like this blog needed a switch from let's be honest, purely movie reviews, because those are all I ever watch anymore.
Jenna Marbles:
I'm going to be honest with you guys, when I first started watching Jenna's channel I honest to god thought that Marbles was her actual last name. But once I was introduced to her cute dog, Marbles, I felt like a complete idiot. The reason why I love Jenna's channel is because she uses humor to cater to all audiences. Then sometimes she just uses her personality to cater to those audiences. Jenna will use her audience as inspiration for her videos and sometimes not. Like in "Jenna's Ratchet Hair Salon," that is just pure comedy in order to get a laugh from her viewers, while in "Some Thoughts On Avacados," she literally uses a whole twelve minutes to rant about avocados being on everything where she lives, and that's just her personality shining through.
Ryan Higa:
I love Ryan Higa because he does a spoof on pretty much every pop culture topic. For example, two of my favorite videos from him are How to Sing Like Your Favorite Artist part 1 and part 2. He finds the humor in the hot topic of the day. About a month ago he made a video spoof on "How to Run for President," clearly a spoof on the presidential race. For me Ryan Higa is a timelessly funny person who I've been watching since "The Big Bouncing Inflatable Green Ball," which premiered around six years ago. Needless to say, I've been watching his channel all the way through the cheesiest of the cheesy videos.
The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon:
You're probably looking at this title like, "What? This doesn't fit in." Well, believe me I laughed at the thought of putting this on my list but the channel of one of the Youtube channels I most frequently watch. I know that I can just record this on TV, but I'm with the generation who can't live without their smart phone. hence me doing everything on it. Sorry, off topic, let's get back to it. I love the Tonight show because Jimmy is one of my most favorite comedians and I watched his show before it was the Tonight Show and is the only reason I watch the actual Tonight Show.

New Netflix Shows: Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Daredevil

Looking for a cute comedy or an action-packed drama to watch during the spring season? Well, I have just what the doctor ordered. Season two of Netflix Original's Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Daredevil return on April 15th (Kimmy Schmidt) and March 18th (Daredevil). Each series is completely different but both equally lovable.
Kimmy Schmidt is a comedy about a 29 year-old who was stuck in a bunker for the majority of her life, then is released, and makes her way to New York to start a whole new life for herself. It's just a wacky, cute comedy with very dramatic and diverse characters. Then there is the theme song. In my opinion when it comes to that show, the theme song is the best part. It is the chatchiest thing ever. It perfectly explains what the show is about, auto-tuned to perfection, in all of about 30 seconds. Kimmy Schmidt is a funny take on a very serious and real topic of kidnapping. I plan on watching the movie Room, also about kidnapping, and it told a very different. In both scenarios both protagonists survive. The difference is in Kimmy Schmidt, it's very dramatic and fantasized, while in Room, it tells the very real story of a very plausible kidnapping story and the ways it impacts a mother and her child.
On the dramatic note, Daredevil is about a blind superhero who, you guessed it, fights crime. But he is also a lawyer, part of the Nelson and Murdock Law Office. During the first season we meet Matt Murdock (Daredevil) and his closest friends, acquaintances, and new people he meets. Plus you get to see a blind man (with a cloth tied over his eyes for dramatic effect) kick some serious butt (oh how I wish to use a different word here). What more could you want? Marvel lovers are in for a treat with this one, but then again if you were a true Marvel lover you would've watched it when it came out last year in April. Either way you get a look into Hell's Kitchen, taking place after the first Avengers movie, where Matt Murdock is trying to pick up the pieces of his city and protect it from the evil it faces. The best part about Daredevil, for me anyway, is the part at the very end of the first season when Daredevil finally gets his own costume and it's like a weight lifted off your shoulders.

iZombie: The CW (A Compilation of My Thoughts)

A show about a zombie who is trying to find a cure in one of the most unique ways possible. I find this show amusing because it takes a modern and humorous take on the whole gory zombie trend. Liv Moore, a human-turned-zombie who has had to uproot her life, become a medical examiner/coroner, and eat the brains of dead people in order to solve police cases. She also has to break up with her fiance, due to the whole being dead thing. The whole show is very quirky, in the sense that there is indeed a cure for the zombification process. Liv discovered that the Utopium (a drug that got laced with something else and created a whole boat-load of zombies) can be cured with more Utopium. The show has an underlying premise of Liv, Ravi (Liv's partner M.E.), and Major (the fiance), all searching for more Utopium in order create the cure.
iZombie is also very amusing due to the fact that Liv takes on the personality of the brains she eats. She has these visions that help her learn the true murderer of the victim's brain whom she is eating. People end up thinking that Liv has some sort of unstable mental health resulting in her overall personality changing very frequently. This all changes once pretty much everyone in her personal life finds out that she is a zombie. \
There isn't really one specific reason why I love iZombie. Sure, it has comic book elements, zombies, some good looking people, lots of humor, lots of actions, you get the point. But what I can say is that it is worth watching even though it may not be the most high quality TV show.

Long Way Down: The Millionth Movie Review

Ever since I heard a song featured on the movie's soundtrack, I've been wanting to watch this movie. As I've stated in an earlier blog post, The Best Soundtrack for Reading, the music that accompanies a story is what makes or breaks it. One of my favorite artists is, Daughter, and her song, Youth, is featured in the movie. The two main reasons why I love this movie is the scenery or the places that it's filmed, and the music that accompanies the scenery. Overall this movie is just a beautifully filmed movie.
The movie is about four suicidal people who all accidentally meet one another upon attempting to commit suicide by jumping off the top of a building on New Year's Eve. After a very long night, Martin, Maureen, J.J., and Jess, all convince each other not to commit suicide until Valentine's Day, the next most popular day for suicide attempts. Between New Year's Eve and Valentine's Day, the group bonds by trying the spin their fame (Martin and Jess), by making a story about their attempt at suicide. Through this period the group bonds, and even goes on a holiday together. Then after Maureen's son takes a trip to the hospital, Maureen realizes she can't commit suicide and leave her son alone. The day that Maureen's son is taken to the hospital, Jess and Martin meet Maureen there to give their support. They all question where J.J. is, then realize that it's Valentine's Day, and how he must be at the top of the building attempting to commit suicide. I won't spoil it, whether J.J. jumps or not, but I will highly recommend to watch and experience it for yourself.
A Long Way Down is a fairly sad movie, but there are very many happy glimpses. You get to see a background into the life of each character and why they are depressed and contemplated suicide. For me, the way that a movie looks is a big factor in whether I will enjoy that movie or not. In this movie the wardrobe, the scenery, even the hue that each scene had, after editing most likely, was all just set to perfection and made me enjoy this movie, on top of the plot which I also thoroughly enjoyed.

Comic Books: A Compilation of My Thoughts

I finally realized that there was one style of book, other than magazines, graphic novels, and the rest of nonfiction, that I have not yet talked about. For this post I don't really have a focus towards comic books so I figured that I would just share my thoughts about comics with you readers.
I love comics because they let me live in a fantasy world where anything is possible. I believe I mentioned this point in my earlier post "Why Read?", but being swept away into a fantasy world where there are brave superheroes who defeat the bad guys. Due to the fact that the original comics were mainly written between the 1940's (Captain America) and the 1960's (Every other superhero ever), there weren't any independent female superheroes. While there was Agent Carter with Captain America and Black Widow (Natasha Romanova) with Iron Man, they still haven't got their own movies but that's a WHOLE other discussion. Anyways, these female characters are my main inspiration for loving comic books because they are bada**, independent, and most of all, brave.
I love delving into the Marvel Universe because every character doesn't back down in times of danger, much unlike myself. If I had to face the dangers these characters did, I would be a coward and probably pee my pants, let's be real we all would.
Plus, the whole history behind the first comic books are very interesting. Take Captain America for example, he was created by Joe Simon and Jack Kirby, who created Captain America because they couldn't stand what was unfolding in Nazi Germany and felt that the United States needed a patriotic hero. Superheroes were basically created because people were overall really sad due to the back-to-back events of WWI, the Great Depression, and WWII.
Overall, I love comic books, because the characters are all very unique, skilled, brave, you get the point. Comics are another source of entertainment that readers/writers like me, use to get away from reality for just a little bit.

H2O: Another Review

This book is about exactly what the title says: water. Only the water in this book is poisonous with a microscopic alien. The destruction of an asteroid that was hurtling towards earth caused all of these bits of "stardust" containing these microscopic aliens, that were extremophile (an organism that could live in extreme weather/temperature conditions), to "fall" into all of the water supply. They reproduce at a speed that humans can't even imagine. People who touch any infected water immediately start to itch because the aliens have begun to reproduce inside of their bloodstream. Humans will itch and itch until they have itched enough of their skin off to die from blood loss.
Gory right? Let's get into the not-as-gory summary of the book, shall we? The main character of the book is Ruby Morris, a fifteen year-old girl who loses her mom, stepdad, and baby brother to the microscopic aliens. The book is mainly the journey of Ruby trying to find her father after the family she lived with died. Ruby loots what's left of her town, takes her car, a few passengers, and what she has looted from the stores, on her journey to London, England, to find her dad. Did I mention that the story start in a town called Dartbridge, England? Anyways, Ruby has all of these not so fun - excuse me, I should probably say life threatening - "adventures" that nearly get her killed because of the rain. Upon getting to London, Ruby finds out that her dad isn't at his house or in the army camp/base set up right outside of London. But after trying to seek refuge in the army camp, they do a screening of Ruby and decide she doesn't have anything to offer. The British army takes Ruby and a group of others on a bus to a remote village and proceed to dump them there and leave. Now Ruby has to make her own way without the British army and look for her dad elsewhere.
I believe the main reason why I enjoy this book so much is because of how childish it sounds. That may sound unintelligent of me and may make this book seem like an easy read, which it is, but that's the truth. If I were a new novelist/author, which Virginia Bergin is, I believe that I would write like her. I love young adult novels, specifically dystopian ones, and I hope to become an author like Suzanne Collins, Cassandra Clare, or Veronica Roth. Maybe I'm biased because I've read so many dystopian YA novels and know they're my favorite, but I particularly enjoy H2O and recommend you read it.

Buzzfeed Quizzes: A New-found Obsession

This topic is a little out of my norm because it isn't a book, movie, or TV show, but it's still pop culture so if the shoe fits? Anyways, buzzfeed quizzes are something that have been around for ages but just now I can't stop taking them. I would say there are some dumb ones out there but then again aren't meaningless quizzes all dumb? Like is a quiz called "Can You Guess The U.S. City From A Single Photo?" or "We Know Which Kanye West Song You Are Based On Your Zodiac?" really at the top of your to-do list? Oddly enough for me, in my free time, other than watching Netflix these are my favorite time-sucking activity.
There is honestly no purpose for Buzzfeed quizzes other than your entertainment. They're meant to make you laugh at the answer you got, because of how off and untrue it is or you marvel at just how accurate Buzzfeed related to you. For example, in the middle of writing this blog post (just before writing this sentence to be exact), I just took a buzzfeed about if I'd survive an apocalypse and it said yes. I related and believed this answer because I love everything to do with the apocalypse, zombies, dystopia, you name it I'm reading, watching, playing it. So naturally, I took the quiz because it sparked my interest and I saw a way to procrastinate writing this blog post.
Frankly I'm in the grey area of whether this blog post was a diary entry or a review so I'll give a one sentence review in the next sentence. Play Buzzfeed quizzes because they are addicting, entertaining, fun, and overall very amusing!

X-Men: A Series Review

As of last night I have concluded my long-awaited finale of the X-Men series, well all of the movies that are out anyway. As a whole, the series was extremely cheesy for me. I think this is due to the fact that the main bulk of the movies were made in the 2000's, which we all want to forget. My favorite movie out of all of them would have to be probably have to be the first one. We learn the backstory of Rogue and Wolverine, who are my favorite characters of the series. It is also easy to watch because it's the first one in the series, where in X-Men: Days of Future Past and The Wolverine, you have to deal with going back in time, new characters, and a whole new setting.
Then again it has been a really long time since I've watched X-Men, X2, and X-Men: The Last Stand. I stopped watching the series for a while because it couldn't be found, but that's off topic. I like the first three movies because it solely revolves around the X-Men, aka Jean, Wolverine, Scott, Professor X, Rogue, Magneto, etc. It was all simple good (X-Men) vs. evil (Magneto and his goons). But with Wolverine they started adding layers upon layers and you need to know the context of it all, and with not having seen the foundation of the movies in so long I was incredibly confused.
X-Men: First Class and X-Men: Days of Future Past all deal with the young Magneto and Professor X. Days of Future Past straight up confused me to bits because I didn't even remember or know half of the characters in it and the fact that it mainly follows Mystic and Wolverine around didn't help all that much. Then at the end, I was thrown for even more of a loop when Logan/Wolverine woke up the X-Mansion, a place that hadn't been featured in a long time, and Charles somehow knows that Logan went in the past and changed the future/past. The thing about that movie that bugged me the most was that the whole thing revolved around Mystic and they didn't tell us that in the first three movies. Plus when they didn't explain how Jean was still alive, I just got even more confused.
Overall the series was good, if you like cheesy and confusing. Something I do look forward to is X-Men: Apocalypse, where I will probably get more confused because there will be even more characters and even more setting.

Series vs. Stand Alone

The continuation of a story vs. the quick wrap-up of a novel. Reading a series for me is far more satisfying than a stand alone book because I know what to read when I'm done with the book I'm reading. You also don't just know what you want to read next, you know what you need to read next. Once you finish that book in the series you will want to read the next one, even if it's the last in the series. Reading a series gives you so much more excitement and hope for the story line than just one book because at the end of that book there is usually a massive cliff hanger leaving you on the edge of your seat, wanting more. With a stand alone book you don't have anything to look forward to, just the boring "happy" ending of the book. If you love a particular author, reading a series is very good for that because you get to experience more of their writing.
With a stand alone book you get a nice, neatly wrapped-up story at the end of your book. With a series, the next book could just get worse, slowly deteriorating that writing you loved so much. You will never be bored with a stand alone book because you are always moving on to a new story. A singular book will tend to be longer than a book in a series. This is because those other authors are trying to give you a run for your money by making their books smaller so that you have to buy or check out more of them. Either way there are pros and cons to both styles of books depending on your preference. My preference is a series because for me I get more out of the experience.

Man of Steel: A Long-Awaited Review

Even though this movie came out three years ago I finally just got to seeing it. This is because I realized, "Holy crap, I've never seen Superman and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is coming out on March 25th!" Anyway I'm here to tell you what happened in the movie and what I thought of it.
The beginning of the movie is basically Superman's dad telling the leaders of Krypton that their world is going to die very soon, them not believing him, General Zod coming in the room and being evil, Superman's dad runs away, does a crime, and does all of this stuff I'm not going to explain, which results in Superman (Kal-El) getting sent to earth in hopes that he will keep the Kryptonian race alive and NOT die. After Kal/Clark/Superman gets sent to Earth, Zod says that he will find Kal and kill him, I'm paraphrasing here.
If you know me at all then you will know that I am an old-fashioned good vs. evil enjoying person. I like straight up protagonist (Superman) vs. antagonist (Zod), and the good guy winning in the end, getting a happy ending. So naturally, I'm rooting for baby Kal to make it to Earth, find a good family to grow up with, and become the superhero the world needs. Suffice to say, I wasn't at all disappointed, because all of these things happen in sequence.
After growing up with hardships; trying not to be discovered, being bullied and fighting the urge not to fight back, and the struggles of having powers, Clark grows up searching for the secrets of where he came from and who his parent were. After a long time searching, he finds a long lost ship that he ends up controlling, only to discover a journalist on board who had followed, Lois Lane- his future love.
I'm pretty much going to skip half of the story but in the end Zod ends up threatening Earth in return for Kal, tries to destroy Earth and make it into Krypton, and dies at the hands of Superman. This death destroys Kal because it was the first kill he was directly responsible for and because he couldn't kill him in time to save a family of four. This was a very emotional moment for me because Superman has a good heart and this caused him to try to be merciful to Zod, when in the end there was no redemption for Zod, who killed that family of four out of revenge towards Superman.

Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice!!!!

First things first, 2016 is going to be such a great year for superhero movies! This is starting off topic but let me list the known movies for you; Deadpool (February 12th), Batman v Superman (March 25th), Captain America: Civil War (May 6th), X-Men: Apocalypse (May 27th), Suicide Squad (August 5th), and Doctor Strange (November 4th). DON'T EVEN GET ME STARTED ON TV SHOWS (Daredevil, March 18th!!!!).
If you didn't notice by that first paragraph I'm VERY excited for this year. Plus that first paragraph gives me five other blog posts, yay! Back on topic, Batman v Superman picks up where Man of Steel left off. At this point, pretty much all we know is that after Man of Steel, Batman goes to Metropolis to fight Superman but ends up having to team up with him and Wonder Woman, to fight another vigilante.
But nonetheless I tear up with excitement at the thought of this movie. It's the dream team of DC superheros, the trinity of DC, the foundation upon which other superheroes lay, you get the point. It's Superman, Batman, and Wonder Woman for crying out loud! I hope all of my exclamation points are making you as excited as I am.
In all of the trailers we see the basics of what I've been telling you, Bruce Wayne attends a party of some sort, where journalist Clark Kent speaks with Bruce to get the latest scoop about Batman from his point of view. I've never read the comics so don't quote me on this, but I believe that in this scene when they are debating about Superman and Batman, they don't know that one another is both Batman and Superman. If that is the case, that they don't know that about each other, then that makes the scene all the more powerful. Because when they do discover each others true identity, which I believe they do (don't quote me on that either), they will be all the more surprised.
Then the fact that the vigilante that they have to fight together is a Frankensteined (is that even a word, I don't think it is) General Zod, is just chaotic. Either way, everything about this movie has been set up to be perfection and I bet the box office results will show how great everyone thinks this movie is.

The New New Girl

The newest of the fifth season of New Girl was a momentous one. The main premise of the episode is that Jess has jury duty and at first is really proud and wants to go but then she tries to get out of it in order to be acting principal at her school. The reason this doesn't work is because she got the infamous gilt trip. On the way to jury duty, she meets this really nice guy who shares her love of jury duty. She makes up all of these crazy lies so that they don't pick her to be on the jury and the lawyer, the nice guy Jess met, sees right through her and knows she's trying to get out of jury duty.
Jess ultimately feels terrible for clearly lying to this guy she really likes, in order to be acting principal. Upon being guilt tripped and saying how great she'd be on the jury, Jess learns that the case she's assigned to is out of town and that she'd be gone for a month. So what does she do? She goes home, packs a bag, says goodbye, and makes a months supply of little pieces paper advice from Jess, all put in a bowl.
While Jess is gone at jury duty for the day, the whole loft goes to crap, pardon my language. Winston puts a hammer in the wall, cracking all of the plaster. Nick and Cece fight like cats and dogs. Nick is put up with how much of a slob Cece is and Cece is sick of Nick telling the same story over and over, trying to be funny all of the time. They later realize that these feelings stem from deeper roots. Nick is jealous of Cece because she spends so much time with Schmidt and Cece is jealous of Nick because she feels that she will never know Schmidt as well as Nick does.
In the end Nick and Cece make up, because while they may not know it, everyone in the loft knows that they are both basically the same person. Overall at the end of the episode, the mood is somber because Jess is a vital part of the loft and she's leaving for a month. In the last scene, Winston, Nick, Cece, and Schmidt, all sit on the couch with Jess's bowl of pieces of advice, making fun of them. That's until Winston reads one that says to stop making fun of the pieces of advice and that she knows that they're reading them. The group is weirded out until Winston says that the piece of paper only says to smile more.
